Going on thru II Corinthians chapters 7 thru 10, we find in chapter 7 with verse 1, the key idea of that #9, New Life teaching that after salvation is when we seek to ‘purify ourselves’ from all known #2, sins and to seek to ‘perfect #1, holiness out of reverence for God.’ We find further #9, New Life teaching and example in comforting others in verse 6 and 7, resulting in joy. Of greatest importance is the passage, verses 9 thru 11, concerning #6, repentance. There is a ‘Godly sorrow that brings repentance that leads to #8, the New Birth of salvation.’ We read examples of this ‘turning’ in verse 11. Further, see this #9, New Life example of ‘boasting’ about others as a means of encouraging them with verses 13 thru 16. Yes, we may boast… of others to others, that all may find encouragement! We find a perfect example of this next, in all of chapters 8 and 9.
With chapter 8, Paul gives a great #9, New Life teaching about giving, all the while ‘boasting’ about the Corinthians to them. Verse 3 says it was of their own free will, and not by another’s command says verse 8. Verses 11 and 12 say that giving is to be from out of what we have, and not what we don’t have.
Paul continues his boasting of the Corinthians, to the Corinthians, in this #9, New Life matter of giving with chapter 9. In keeping with the free will nature of it, he says it is not to be grudgingly given in verse 5, or reluctantly, or as under compulsion, but based on what he has decided to give, all in verse 7. Verse 6 is truly key! What is generous, and what is sparingly? If you don’t know, consider whether 10% is not the threshold between those 2. Everywhere else in scripture it would appear to be. And, note the blessing in generous giving with verses 8 thru 11! Verse 10 says this is a matter of #1, righteousness. Want to be blessed? Be a blessing to others!!! The chapter ends with God’s example of giving, in the last verse, He gave us Jesus, His Son, to be our #4, Savior, and He gave us the gift of #8, salvation and everlasting life thru Him! After all He has given you, how can you not be generous?
In response to Paul’s critics and opposition in Corinth, Paul writes chapter 10. We see keen #9, New Life instruction for us in verses 1, 3 thru 5, 8, and 12 thru 18. It’s all about ‘boasting’ and ‘commending,’ but for the purpose of ‘building others up’ says verse 8. Paul’s authority also had to do with punishing #2, sin according to verse 6. And, Paul’s boasting also had everything to do with the geographical extent to which he was going to bring #5, the Gospel to others who had never heard that many more might be saved says verses 13 thru 16. It’s what the Book is all about!
