Colossian Key to Christian Living

We conclude Colossians with chapter 4. It, like chapter 3 before it, is largely the #9, New Life practical application of the first 2 chapters’ teaching. This is in verses 1 thru 6, and verse 12. There is a final mention of #10, the Kingdom in verse 11 and the reference to proclaiming a message in verses 3 and 4 in relation to the word ‘mystery’ again. This is a blatant effort to impress the Colossians one last time that it is #5, the Gospel that is the real message, and not any of that Gnostic baloney of 2:18 thru 23. See there, how it ends on the note as to how the Gnostics taught them to live? Paul counters that explicitly….

Chapter 3, and verse 16, opens a parallel with Ephesians 5:18. See the common similarities between Col.3:16 thru 4:1, and Eph.5:18 thru 6:9. We note the resulting concepts of joy and gratitude originating here, to go on into mutual submission one to another, resulting in right relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and employers and employees. But note the one principal difference. Col.3:16 says to ‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,’ while Eph.5:18 says to literally let yourselves be being continually filled with the Holy Spirit at all times. These two ideas are actually twin and parallel. The idea of being filled with the Spirit, resulting in all that follows right on into chapter 6 of Ephesians, is the very same idea as letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly, which is also said to result in all the very same evidences mentioned right into Colossians 4. See that? The point is, as it truly relates to real #9, New Life in Christ, Christian living, that in order to be filled with the Spirit, so as to know joy, gratitude and right relationships… one needs to be letting the Word dwell in them richly. There is a clear connection that exists between Holy Spirit fullness, and being richly full of the Word, that results in all of these benefits. It is… both the Spirit and the Word! Can you see that?

But, and now, here is the critically important difference between these 2… you cannot fill yourself with the Holy Spirit, but can only submissively wait upon the Lord for Him to be filling youBut, you can be actively going about the business of letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly, by filling yourself with the Word! In fact, only you can fill yourself with the Word, that it might dwell in you richly! See that? The one may precede the other. You may fill yourself with the Word, that you might be being filled with the Holy Spirit by the Lord!!! THAT, my friend, is what real#9, New Life Christian living can be! And, The 10 Essential Elements of The Real New Testament Message can be a key tool for filling yourself with the Word. It’s what the Book is all about!
