Concluding I Timothy with chapters 4 thru 6, We find 8 of The Essential Elements of The Real New Testament Message in chapter 4. Starting with #5, the Gospel, we see it’s mention in verses 1 and 6. When we read of things pertaining to the End Times, we are drawing near to #10, the Kingdom, such as what we read in verses 1 thru 3, with its actual mention found in verse 8 with ‘the life to come’. We find the matter of #2, sin in verses 1 thru 3, and 7. We always look for its opposite, #1, righteousness and find that in verses 6 thru 8, and verse 12. We have God as our #4, Savior in verse 10, with the necessity to #7, believe in order for a person to become saved with verses 3, 10 and 11. There is a great deal of #9, New Life instruction beginning with verse 3, and found pretty much throughout to the last verse. Note 3 elements to be part of our Christian worship services in verse 13; public reading of Scripture, preaching and teaching. The #8, New Birth is seen in verse 16.
With chapter 5, we can see 7 of The Essential Elements. We have a great quantity of #9, New Life instruction from the first verse thru verse 22. That matter of #1, righteousness appears throughout in verses 2, 10, 22 and 25. It’s opposite, #2, sin shows itself with verses 6, 11 thru 13, 15, 20, 22 and 24. With sin, comes #3, judgment such as we find in verses 12, and especially 24. We have one mention of #5, the Gospel with verse 8, and the necessity as always for the exercise of #7, faith in order to be a Christian as verses 5, 8 and 16 make clear. Finally, we have a glorious allusion to #10, the Kingdom with the very end of the last verse, where it speaks of our eternal rewards for our deeds since our conversion.
Concluding with chapter 6, it, too, is full of #9 New Life teaching, beginning with verses 1 and 2, 6 and 7, 11 thru 14, and 17 thru 20. We also find #5, Gospel in verses 1, 3, 10, 12 and 21, with expressions like ‘teaching,’ and ‘the faith’. It seems we can never find #1, righteousness as with verses 3, 5 and 6, 11 and 18; without also finding its opposite in #2, sin as with verses 3 thru 5, 9 and 10, and verses 20 and 21. For sin there is the ever-present threat of severe #3, judgment as verses 9 and 10 make clear. The only salvation from this comes by #7, believing as verses 2, 12 and 17 point out. Mention of our blessed glorious end in #10, the Kingdom is declared in verses 12, 14 thru 16, and 19. We’ve found all but #6, repentance in I Timothy, but that’s not to say that it is not essential, as we find it everywhere else, and where Paul admonishes Timothy to rebuke and correct others, the interest in provoking those to repentance is clearly the intent and purpose in view. Some of the most precious statements in scripture are here, like 1:15+16, and 2:1 thru 6. Tremendous instruction concerning the basic subject of money is here with 6:3-10, and 17 thru 19. There are invaluable Essential Elements to The Real New Testament Message. It’s what the Book is all about!
