John chapter 8 is of 5 parts, and Jesus is still in Jerusalem for that Fall feast. The first part is verses 1 thru 11, and is the unique story of the Jews bringing a woman caught in adultery to Jesus in order to trap Him. We see plainly that at issue are these two things of #1, righteousness and #2, sin. And since the matter had to do with condemnation, we know that #3, judgment is here, as well. By the end of the story, there are no witnesses to testify against her, and so, even though the Savior ‘saw’ and knew it to be true. He does not condemn her, and commands her to #6, repent of her life of sin, and go on to live a #9, New Life… as should we all! Next, Jesus returns to teaching the people and declares Himself to be The Light of the World! What did He mean? As the Light, He gives illumination, understanding of what is real and what is right; of God and His ways. He reveals the Father, as stated previously in 1:18. He says that is His meaning here with verse 19. This is the light of life, life eternal in #10, the Kingdom! Do you know Him? From here, Jesus challenges the leadership by openly declaring to them just Who He really is; The Great I Am, or their #4, Savior and God come in human flesh, as 1:14 had said. With this, He tells them that they will die in their #2, sin in verse 21 and be #3, judged for it says verse 26; because they would not #7, believe in Him says verse 24, even as others were believing on Him at that very moment, as the passage closes with verse 30. He even alludes to the element of His death, as found in #5, the Gospel with verse 28.
The last 3 parts have to do with them who are His, and those who are of the Devil, and concludes with Who He is! Verses 31 thru 41 speak of Abraham’s true children, and how that they will #7, believe upon Jesus, be set free from their #2, sin and its #3, penalty, and be #8, saved, as verses 32, 34 and 36 allude. This brings Jesus to harsh words of condemnation and #3, judgment of the Jewish leadership and verses 42 thru 47. They do not hear Him, or believe upon Him, because they are of the very Devil, himself! The chapter concludes, verses 48 thru 59, about Jesus, Himself. And how does it conclude?
Who is Jesus? The Jewish leadership greatly insult Jesus by calling him a Samaritan and saying that He is demon-possessed; at the very time that He is explaining to them, that as their #4, Savior, those who would keep His word would come into eternal life and never see death! And, just Who was it that Jesus made Himself out to be before these very Jewish leaders of Israel? Just as He plainly stated in verses 24, 28 and, especially, 58. Jesus is The Great I Am!!! They knew what He meant! They considered His claim to be blasphemy, and picked up stones to stone Him! But, He just hid Himself, and slipped away! And, if you will check, all of The 10 Essential Elements of The Real New Testament Message are right here in John chapter 8. It’s what the Book is all about!
