Read 69.) Joshua 1:1 thru 5:12. Moses has passed. It’s about 1406 BC, and the time of Joshua has come. Verses 7 thru 9 are so inspirational! While they were directly to Joshua, you know that they find application for every one of us who read them. If the Word of the Lord is our love and life, we know that this will result in unusual blessing of the Lord besides. This has been your experience, too, hasn’t it? The remainder of the chapter speaks of Israel’s preparation to enter into The Promised Land, specifically as it has to do with those 2 1/2 tribes that already have land on the east side of the Jordan River. Chapter 2 is the very famous story of Rehab the harlot of Jericho, and how she saved the lives of the 2 Israeli spies and later became one in the line of Messiah, as Matthew 1:5 tells us; such is the marvelous grace of God! Chapter 3 then continues with the account of Israel’s crossing of the Jordan River, on dry ground while it was at flood stage, as all Israel crossed over into The Promised Land for the very first time. To make clear the picture, the river stopped flowing well up-stream so that Israel, more than 2 million strong, could cross over, both above and below the place where Levites were holding the Ark in the middle of the river bed, but at a distance of more than 1/2 mile away from it! This took place in our March/April time frame, and we can mark it as being now about 1405 BC. Chapter 4 completes the account of Israel’s passage over the Jordan, and of the setting up of the 12-stone monument to this miraculous event.
It is chapter 5 that holds special significance for us, particularly the passage, verses 10 thru 12. With this passage, our story transitions again, from that of The Exodus Stage, which began with Exodus 1:8, to a new time period. This will be The Conquest Stage. As Exodus 1:7 records the fulfillment of the first of The 4 Promises and Prophesies God gave to the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; so, with this passage, we come to the fulfillment of the second of those 4, with the completion of The Exodus Stage by Joshua 5:12. This next time period, of Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land, will take us all the way thru the book of Joshua, and into the next book; Judges. This will be a most valuable period of time in our study, as what Israel does here will become the determining factor for all of their next 1,000 years of recorded history in their Bible!
As with everything before, all of this has to do with 2 principal things. First, this is all meant to take us to God’s very own personal goal and purpose of Revelation 21 and 22, His Kingdom; so that we know the end from the beginning. And, second, it also has everything to do with bringing forth Messiah; the means by which any one of us might be able to enter into God’s Kingdom. It’s a path that God laid out by means of 7 Promises and Prophecies, which He sovereignly fulfills, so as to prove His existence and that the Bible is His Word. By this, we know the 7-point outline of the entire story. Indeed, this is what the Book is all about!
